A Lasting Impact: The Legacy of Faustino Bernadett, Sr., M.D.

Written by Faustino Bernadett:
My father, Faustino Bernadett, Sr. M.D., has always been my biggest inspiration. Born to immigrant parents from Chihuahua, Mexico, he grew up in Michigan and dedicated his life to serving others. He later moved to Chico, California, where he became the only Spanish-speaking family doctor in the area. He balanced his commitment to the community with his responsibilities to his family of seven children.
His practice was always busy, and he often accepted payment in tamales, chili, or chickens. These gifts taught us that value isn’t just about money. My father was dedicated to the Mexican American community in Chico and also extended his care internationally. He even volunteered in Vietnam, providing medical care for the Montagnard people. I remember stepping up as the “man of the house” when he was away.
When he returned, he continued to serve both local and international communities. For 14 years, he flew to Noragachi, Mexico, for two weeks each year, where the Tarahumara people would travel long distances to see him. At 14, I went with him and assisted in my first surgery, which sparked my interest in medicine. For many, my father’s visit was the only time they saw a doctor each year. He did all of this quietly, without support from any non-profits, until his trips ended after a plane crash that left everyone safe.
In addition to being a physician, my father was a committed teacher, mentoring Family Medicine residents and students at UC Davis. Even with his busy schedule, he made family time a priority, often flying to meet his teaching commitments. Sadly, his life ended in a plane crash on the way home one stormy night.
Despite his serious commitments, he had a great sense of humor and humility. To honor his legacy, I recently established the Faustino Bernadett, Sr. M.D. Scholarship Fund at Clinica Tepati and am looking for more opportunities to do the same. I want to carry forward his spirit of dedication, compassion, and service to the community.
